Starting your own dental clinic is not an easy task. However, we are here to help! First up, you need a list of all dental clinic equipment to purchase and get started.
Having the right tools and equipment ensures that you do the job efficiently and successfully.
It can help in providing a safe and secure environment for your patients that builds trust in your work.
So among so many things that you need to set up your practice such as area, name, and treatment rates, the priority should go to the equipment needed.
Keep reading the article below to know what equipment should you have to setup a fully functioning clinic.
So, let’s not wait further and begin!
Basic Dental Clinic Equipment
Basic dental equipment is what you cannot work without.
These should be present on your tray as they help in diagnosing and treating every small or big problem.
Starting up with:
Dental Mouth Mirror
The mouth mirror helps the dentist in seeing the oral cavity clearly and exploring it to find out any problems.
It allows viewing directly as well as indirectly in the case of a double-sided mirror.
Moreover, it acts as a separator to keep the tongue and cheeks away from interfering with the view of the teeth and gums.
It has different sizes but all are small enough to fit in a mouth and make it an adaptable and practical instrument in dentistry.
You cannot see the oral cavity clearly and magnified without it, hence, it is a basic requirement.
Forceps
Forceps are another medical equipment that you need on the tray.
There are different types of forceps for separate tasks.
Among these include surgical, hemostatic, ligatures, and more.
They can come in use in transporting small objects out of the oral cavity and to it, suturing tissues, separating them, and holding them in place.
Probes
The probes have a long and thin tip.
In dentistry, there are of three types:
- periodontal probe
- straight probe
- Brault probe
The periodontal probe measures the depth of gum pockets.
The straight probe examines cavities while the Brault probe detects tartar in gum pockets.
Pilers
Pilers come more in use in orthodontics and laboratory.
It can bend hooks, cut through wires, plaster, and dowels.
Pilers come with different tips and it has several types depending on your need use.
Along with these instruments, you will need rotary equipment that helps to rotate the dental equipment attached to it.
Let’s dig deeper into that below.
Rotary Instruments
Rotary instruments cause rotation at different speeds of the dental bur that is placed at its end.
They connect to hoses of other dental instruments to enable them to rotate.
Hence, they have different couplings depending on the type of connection made.
Dental Handpieces
There are two kinds of dental handpieces:
- Straight
- Contra-angle
Straight handpieces have the lowest speed among the rotatory instruments.
That is around 20,000 to 40,000 rpm.
They refine prostheses and do not come in use inside the mouth.
These attach to a micromotor and may have a light.
On the other hand, contra-angle handpieces work in the mouth.
They help in removing filling, and decay, preparing the teeth for crowns and finishing plus polishing dental restorative surfaces.
These usually have low speed but high torque.
Turbines
A dental turbine has the lowest torque but the highest speed of all rotary instruments.
It works through air compression directly coming from the dental unit’s hose.
Hence, it comes in use in procedures that pose greater resistance to the treatment.
An example would be using removing hard tissues from the enamel which is one of the strongest materials on your teeth.
Light Curing Dental Lamps
These lamps come in use for light curing procedures.
The ultraviolet light from the lamp acts on light-curing material such as composites and adhesives causing them to harden and polymerize in a short time.
Micromotor
Micromotors are used for treating semi-hard dental tissues.
The instrument connects to a dental equipment’s hose moreover, uses different working speeds and torques.
Different instruments can go on the micromotor such as handpieces.
Apex Locator
An Apex Locator comes in handy in root canal treatment.
It measures the frequency, resistance, and impedance of the surrounding material to locate the length of the root canal space that needs treatment.
Requirements for Dental Clinic Furniture
Besides dental startup equipment, you will also have furniture for your new setup.
These include:
- dental chair
- cabinet lamps
- washer-disinfector
- dentist cart
- dental stools
Getting a dental chair with a unit is one of the essential furniture in your setup.
The unit consists of the handpiece equipment i.e. micromotor, ultrasound, turbine, etc, the water distiller, control panels, glass filling, and autoclave.
The chair should be sturdy enough that your patient can lie on it and you can adjust its position accordingly to perform the procedure comfortably.
When choosing the chair consider its material and ensure it is hard wearing that can last you a long time.
Cabinet lamps are either floor or wall mounted.
They can also be part of the dental unit.
The lamps and lights are as necessary as the chairs to work with precision and diagnose the patient’s problem.
These should be adjustable so that you can get the light directly on the patient’s mouth.
The lamps are essentially made of a head and arm with a concave surface that reflects halogen or LED light.
The lights at a Kelvin temperature remain natural and comfortable, while also helping the dentist to identify realistic colors during the treatment.
To continue your practice regularly, your equipment’s need to be completely disinfected regularly.
Hence, you will need a washer-disinfector to remove all the bacteria and other particles from your instruments.
It cleans at a high temperature, ensuring all bacteria leaves.
To reach all of the tools while you are performing the procedure, you will need a dentist’s cart.
It provides power to your electrical equipment and allows the tools to be nearby.
Lastly, you will need a stool to sit on along with tripod support and work comfortably.
Machinery and Large Appliances
Now that you have all the tools and dental clinic materials list, you will also need some machinery and large appliances.
These are usually for diagnostic purposes or sterilization in order to disinfect the tools and instruments.
First up there is the X-ray Machine.
To diagnose the problem associated with your oral cavity, it is crucial for the dentist to see your X-ray.
They cannot begin certain treatments without getting a good look into the position and condition of your current teeth.
Hence, in order to correctly diagnose, a dentist would need the Dental X-ray machine and its materials in the clinic.
X-ray or computed radiography can take an image that shows up on the computer screen immediately.
Therefore, you can tell right them to your patient about their condition and begin treating that immediately.
The other large appliance is an Autoclave.
An autoclave is an appliance that performs sterilization at a temperature of 100 degrees celsius using steam.
Besides the machinery and other equipment, you will also need a supply of consumables.
More on that below.
Dental Clinic Equipment and Consumables
Consumables
These are tools and equipment that you will need at your disposal to fulfill your basic needs with each patient.
They include latex gloves, bib napkins, dental burs, endodontic instruments, dental composites, and dental sutures.
In order to ensure cleanliness and a sterile environment you should have disposable gloves and napkins at hand.
This prevents the spread of disease from patients to you and vice versa.
A bib napkin is right under the patient’s mouth.
It aims to catch any dribble or other small fragments that can land on the clothes.
This can be unpleasant for the patient hence, the bib napkin prevents any such occurrence.
Besides these, several other instruments may come in handy during your practice, such as:
- diagnostic instruments e.g. tweezer, endo excavator, endo spreader, endo plugger
- sterilizing equipment e.g. needle burner, hot water bath, UV chamber, glass beads sterilizer
- surgical instruments e.g. Austins retractor, forceps kit, needle holder, straight and curved scissors, root elevator, bone files, bone curette, suturing needle
- dental furniture and equipment such as compressor, motorized suction machine, scaler, air motor, airotor cartridge, air polisher, spray and handpiece cleaning lubricant, ultrasonic cleaner
- prosthodontic instruments such as crown remover, spirit lamp, wax spatula, impression tray, plaster knife
- orthodontic instruments such as wire cutter, universal piler, Erich arch bar
- preventive e.g. fluoride tray, disclosing solution, the floss dispenser
- essential dental equipment such as amalgam carver, burnisher, composite filling, spoon excavator, bur chuck, matrix retainer
Alongside the essential dental clinic equipment, you would need the ones above for your daily appointments as well.
Remember to purchase only good quality equipment that can last you a long while.
Even if you go for disposable ones, choose those of good quality so that there is no infection and disease transmission from the patient to the doctor and vice versa.
